This NQF level 5 Learning programme is a three year programme accredited by the Council on Higher Education (CHE). The qualification it achieves is registered on the Higher Education Qualifications Sub Framework.
Applicants wishing to study online, in distance learning mode, may apply to be accepted to the programme but can only be enrolled when accreditation is confirmed in writing. Applicants will be notified by 10 January 2023.
The Higher Certificate in Coaching Science qualifies you to work as a sport coach in a junior sport coaching context. It will allow coaches who work in a junior school environment a stepping stone towards a life-long career in coaching
During this learning programme, you will be exposed to the theories of exercise science, the applied knowledge of sport coaching programmes with their range of sport-specific methods and techniques, and the skills of leading participants through a range of sport sessions. To gain confidence while you are learning, you will complete a range of practical hours through work-based learning. Once you have graduated you can work as a junior coach, working in schools or sport clubs; alternatively, you can run your own practice, taking on a range of private clients who wish to improve their sport skills
Social coaching skills:
Coaching skills: You will learn how to develop your own coaching philosophy and be introduced to topics relevant to the value system of a coach.
Special needs and mental skills: This addresses diversity and equity, and includes relevant social issues, equity legislation, government policy and inclusion of special needs in sport. Health and safety: This module identifies the moral, legal and financial reasons why health and safety are important factors in the workplace.
Sport team management: Learn how to plan and manage a team during the course of a season, addressing effective communication and logistics.
Exercise science: Anatomy, physiology and human development are the cornerstones of sports coaching. Understanding how the human body develops and functions is critical in developing a coaching plan for a young sportsperson.
Applied kinesiology and training methods: This addresses the basic structures and functions that are integrated to perform movement. The module lays a base of knowledge imperative to being able to train, educate or alter movement patterns through exercise training and prescription.
Screening, Assessment, testing: The module outlines the requirements for sport specific screening and assessments with data analysis based on scientific principles.
Applied coaching science: This module provides the foundational knowledge needed to develop a coaching plan. It introduces key topics required to plan individual sessions through to a yearly calendar. You will identify the key steps and time periods required to alter the skill of an activity.
Coach a sport: You can choose from one of five sports offered (rugby, cricket, hockey, football and netball). The module then deals with the rules and regulations governing the sport. It allows you to learn the skill of coaching a particular sport, through an understanding of the skills required and the drills/activities that best teach these skills.
A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with Higher Certificate admission and compliance with the language requirements for eta. The NSC pass required is an elementary achievement (rating code 2/F) with an overall score of 30-39% and a minimum pass of 30% in English.
A National Certificate Vocational (NCV) and compliance with the language requirements for eta. An alternative matriculation exam e.g. Independent Examination Board (IEB) which is the body representing private schools and compliance with the language requirements for eta.
A Further Education and Training Certificate (NQF 4) in a cognate field e.g. fitness, coaching or sport administration. Under certain conditions, level 4 Occupational Certificates in a cognate field may be considered for admission plus relevant work experience (see RPL policy).
