Introduction

The Advanced Certificate in Coaching Science responds to the continuing growth of the sport sector and the establishment of its professional body for coaching practitioners. This qualification addresses the increasing need for specialisation in the sport coaching sector, acknowledging that as the coaching profession expands, and builds its social identity, so too does its professional knowledge and skills. As a qualified coach from this programme, you are able to design and manage a sport coaching programme (skills, movement techniques, and tactical skills) for the performance or participation needs of particular athletes or teams.

Description

This NQF level 6 Learning programme is accredited (with conditions) by the Council on Higher Education (CHE). The qualification it achieves is registered on the Higher Education Qualifications Sub Framework.

This qualification addresses the increasing need for specialisation in the sport coaching sector, acknowledging that as the coaching profession expands, and builds its social identity, so too does its professional knowledge and skills. As a qualified coach from this programme, you are able to design and manage a sport coaching programme (skills, movement techniques, and tactical skills) for the performance or participation needs of particular athletes or teams

This qualification ensures that you are taught the professional practices of sport coaching with current principles of exercise science. You will develop the appropriate knowledge and skills for professional practice in sport coaching at a specific coaching level. Your education and training will be aligned with the sport and fitness community while enhancing professional standards of coaching.

Coaching Skills:
Communication skills: Verbal and non-verbal cues are addressed to ensure that the coach has the skills to communicate appropriately and effectively.
Technical analysis: This subject provides practical knowledge of how and when game analysis programmes are best utilised.
Professional practice: The laws, ethical considerations and governance in practical situations. Scope of practice; including responsibilities and safety of each athlete.
Coaching Science:
Nutrition and ergogenic aids: Nutrition resources for athletes and the dangers of banned substances. Physiological screening, assessment and testing: Sound, scientific and industry-regulated screening and assessment protocols.
Skills screening and testing: Introducing scientific and industry regulated screening and assessment protocols used to assess a broad range of sporting skills and techniques.
Skills training and programme prescription: You learn how to teach a series of drills aimed at practising, improving or correcting a sport specific skill, and building on that skill to achieve correct movement. Long Term Athlete Development: This subject deals with the theoretical and practical implementation of a developmental plan for young participants.

Sport Development:
History and sociology of sport: How sport and society interact. In the South African context, the two are integrated and an understanding of both is essential when coaching.

Coaching Management:
Applying management principles and theories to sport: It is essential that a coach understands how to run and administer his or her own business and understands the fundamentals around managing it. Sport tour management: This provides the framework and structure for a coach to be able to plan, manage and undertake a sports tour.

Coaching Elective:
Sport elective: Cricket, soccer, hockey, netball, rugby and tumbling form part of the special elective.
Capstone project: An interactive and comprehensive long-term project requiring you to call on the theory and skills they have learnt throughout the year and apply this to a sports programme.

To enter this programme, you must have achieved the NQF level-5 Higher Certificate in Coaching or National Certificate in Coaching or an equivalent qualification in the field of exercise science at NQF level 5.
